Fears and phobias

Phobias are very common and fears are a normal part of growing up. But when a phobia interferes with the family or child's functioning, it's important to address it. Phobias about particular foods of a certain texture might prevent a child from touching or even looking at the food. Similarly, a phobia about certain items of clothing, such as buttons. Sometimes, OT will help dissipate the fear if it's sensory related. If it's not, then exposure, desensitization and/or therapy are needed. Don't allow your child to avoid the subject of the phobia; avoidance will only exacerbate it.
